Here are the 10 GMO crops currently on the market in the United States:

  • Corn – Modified to resist pests like the European corn borer (Bt corn) or to tolerate herbicides (e.g., Roundup Ready corn).

  • Soybeans – Engineered for herbicide resistance to make weed control easier.

  • Cotton – Modified to reduce pest damage and pesticide use.

  • Canola – Altered to tolerate herbicides for easier weed management.

  • Papaya – Genetically modified to resist the ringspot virus, which devastated Hawaii’s papaya crops before this innovation.

  • Potatoes – Some varieties have been modified to reduce bruising and produce fewer harmful substances when fried.

  • Apples – Non-browning varieties (like Arctic Apples) reduce food waste by staying fresh longer.

  • Sugar Beets – Engineered primarily for herbicide tolerance; a major source of U.S. granulated sugar.

  • Alfalfa – Modified for herbicide resistance; used mainly as animal feed.

  • Squash (yellow crookneck and zucchini) – Engineered to resist viruses that commonly affect squash plants.

Do GMOs Pose Any Health Risks?
Many consumers are concerned about the potential health risks of GMOs, but research consistently shows that GMOs are safe for human consumption. The FDA, USDA, and EPA rigorously regulate and test GMO crops to ensure they meet strict safety standards before they reach the market. Studies from reputable organizations like the National Academy of Sciences, World Health Organization (WHO), and American Medical Association (AMA) confirm that GMOs are no more likely to cause health problems than conventional crops.  

For example, crops like Bt corn, which is modified to resist pests, contain a protein that is harmless to humans and animals, as it only targets specific insects. Additionally, research has shown that genetically modified foods do not introduce new allergens or toxins, and long-term studies have shown no adverse health effects from consuming GMOs.
