New York’s beef producers are raising high-quality cattle that provide families with a nutritious source of protein, while also fueling our state’s economy and strengthening rural communities.
Beef’s Role in New York Agriculture
New York is home to nearly 10,000 farms and ranches with cattle and calves (NY Beef Council, USDA Census of Agriculture 2022). Among them are over 102,000 beef cows raised specifically for beef production. While the average herd size is modest, about 16 head per farm, together these farms make a big impact.

In total, New York farms care for approximately 1.4 million cattle and calves (USDA NASS, 2025). This includes dairy and beef animals, all of which contribute to the agricultural economy. Beef cattle alone generate more than $359 million annually in cash receipts (NY Beef Council).
That economic activity doesn’t stop at the farm gate. Beef production supports feed suppliers, equipment dealerships, veterinarians, processors, and local businesses. Every dollar spent raising beef cattle ripples through rural towns, creating jobs and sustaining local economies. Statewide, agriculture supports about 163,000 jobs and contributes over $2.7 billion to New York’s GDP (NY Comptroller’s “Profile of Agriculture in New York State”).
More Than Just a Business
Beef farmers aren’t just producers of high-quality protein; they’re also community members, neighbors, and leaders. They serve on school boards, coach youth sports, volunteer at fire departments, and support local fairs and food pantries. With 95% of New York farms being family-owned (NY Beef Council), many have been passed down for generations, reflecting a deep commitment to both heritage and future generations.
Why Beef Matters at the Table
Beef is one of the most nutrient-dense proteins available, providing essential nutrients like iron, zinc, and B vitamins that fuel active, healthy lifestyles. Whether it’s a classic burger on the grill or a slow-cooked roast on a fall evening, beef raised in New York connects farm families to dinner tables across the state.
