Every February, National FFA Week gives communities across the country a chance to celebrate the next generation of agricultural leaders — and here in New York State, there is so much to highlight. This week is an opportunity to recognize the young people, educators, and supporters who are cultivating leadership, innovation, and passion for agriculture across our state.
In New York, the growth of agricultural education and FFA has been remarkable. Today, New York State is home to more than 200 FFA chapters, reaching students in over 50 of New York’s 62 counties, and serving more than 13,000 FFA members — a substantial increase from 9,300 members just a few years ago.
This expansion reflects a broader commitment to agricultural education and workforce development. Since 2016, the number of certified agricultural teachers in New York has grown by more than 75%, bringing more opportunities for students across the state to engage in hands-on learning, leadership development, and real-world agricultural experiences.
FFA members develop valuable skills through classroom instruction, supervised agricultural experiences, and leadership events. Many participate in careers spanning animal science, agribusiness, veterinary technology, environmental stewardship, and more. The organization’s motto — “Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve” — reflects the practical and personal growth cultivated through FFA participation.
This National FFA Week, we also celebrate the educators and advisors who make agricultural education possible in communities big and small. Their dedication ensures that students not only learn about agriculture but also build confidence, critical thinking skills, and civic engagement.
